*screams and hits stuff*
Arrrrrrrrrgggghh!!!

Can someone explain to me just WTF compels certain people to create computer viruses/trojans/whatever the hell they are and unleash them on random unsuspecting people?? Are they really that bored or screwed up in the head that they have to do this?!!!!!!

When I started my computer this morning, the desktop didn't load completely. Then the screen kept going out.  No interruption of power to the monitor, it was like the computer itself was causing the desktop to disappear and everything to go black.  I tried to figure out what was causing it but nothing worked and the computer was being abnormally slow. I restarted and the desktop loaded completely, but the screen kept going out (again there was nothing wrong with the monitor).  For a split second, this Symantec window came up (I have both Norton Antivirus and Internet Security) that said something like "your computer may be at risk." I couldn't read the rest of it because the window disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

I decided to do a virus scan. It's been about 2 hours and it's still running. Every so often everything will appear to stop and the screen will go out, then come back on.  And it's sooooooo slow... if I can be sure it's still running, anyway.

Only thing I can think of is that it's a virus. I hate not knowing exactly what it is. I can't call Dell tech support because my warranty expired.  I have no idea who can help me with this.  If the virus scan doesn't pick anything up I may reboot in safe mode and see if I can do "last known good configuration" or something like that.  The thing I really need to do is back up my files, especially email folders. I've been meaning to for a long time, but my stupid CD-RW drive doesn't work right. I can only back up to things like pen drives or external hard drives.  If this stupid thing will let me do it now...

Sorry I'm so slow with replying to comments. I just hopped onto my mom's laptop in order to give you all an update of what's going on. I'm not sure if I'll be able to resume the picspams tomorrow like I promised. If I can't get this stupid computer working again, it's going to set me back a little.  I'll get back on here later and let you know what the status is.  I just hope I can figure out what the hell this is and how to fix it.

And it was working fine last night.

People who create computer viruses are the scum of the earth.

It's a mix of boredom, happiness at 'hitting others where it hurts' and pride in being able to create something that's better than a virus scanner (you probably didn't want to know this).
You'll see whether it's a virus on safe mode so good luck with that. *crosses fingers*
jessm78: sam/daniel hugjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 01:07 am (UTC)
Yeah, sounds about right to me.

Funny you should mention that. The virus scan didn't detect any viruses. Yay to scum who create super-intelligent viruses. *fumes*

I bought a small external hard drive and I'm copying all my important files to it. I also talked to some tech guys at Best Buy and they said they could help me figure out what's wrong with the hard drive. For a fee, of course. *sigh* I really want to know what's going on, though.
tiah15: hugtiah15 on August 25th, 2008 07:36 am (UTC)
Did you try the safe mode already ? Is the monitor working there ? If not there should be something wrong with your hardware and no virus. If yes, it could be among others either some kind of virus or a driver problem (e.g. of your graphics card). If you could do a system check and have a look at that (or send it to me and I'll have a look) then you might find the problem. The last solution is obviously to reformat the hard drive.
I can tell you what thos guys from Best Buy will do first. They'll check what happens with another monitor and then with another hard drive.

I forgot. For next time: it's always good to have more than one anti virus/ malware/spyware program because they aren't always updated the same way :)
Good luck !

Thanks so much for the advice, hon! I did some searching on the internet and it sounds like it could be a problem with my video card/driver. When I got home today I tried to start the computer and the blue screen of death came up. It said something about a device driver problem, like "the device driver got stuck in an infinite loop." I guess I should uninstall the driver and then update it, but I can't get on the internet because I can't start the computer normally, only in Safe Mode. :P
tiah15tiah15 on August 25th, 2008 10:25 pm (UTC)
Hey, I guessed it might be a diver! *is glad her time at uni wasn't for nothing* I guess you'll need to download it somewhere else and then reinstall. Hope that really IS the only problem.
blackbirdj2: samdean rough lifeblackbirdj2 on August 24th, 2008 06:49 pm (UTC)
Oh no, I hope it's not a virus. I've asked the same question a few days back. Who finds it funny to create virusses and trojans is seriously disturbed. *rolls eyes*

Thanks, I hope not either. The virus scan said there were no viruses but I can't figure out what else it could be. I'm copying my important files now and thinking about calling a "geek squad" tech support to help me with it. I'm on my mom's laptop again for the last time tonight.

Those people are insane. And it was working fine last night. I didn't download anything between then and today. I guess their "super virus" was hiding on my hard drive, trying to find the perfect time to cause trouble.

Thanks hon.

A pack of super freaks, they are. :(

At the moment I have it in safe mode, so I can't get online (using my mom's laptop again). I bought an external hard drive so I'm copying my most important files to it. The "geek squad" guys at Best Buy offered to run a diagnostic on it to see what the problem is (the virus scan didn't detect any viruses, interestingly). For a fee, of course. Trying to decide if I should go for it. I just want to find out what the problem is and how to fix it.

Once I do that and can get back online, I'm going to switch all my passwords and whatnot. Heck, I'll do it now from this laptop (don't know why I didn't think of that before...heh).

I tried to switch it to the last restore point, but it was still misbehaving. Unless I try to go back further than that...

Thanks hon :) Hopefully I'll figure out what's wrong and get it up and running again.

*hugs*

Well, guess what greeted me when I tried booting it up when I got home today. Blue screen of death. Said something about device driver stuck in an infinite loop. I looked it up on the internet and it seems to be a problem with the video card/driver. Most of the advice is to uninstall it then reinstall/update, but I can't get on the internet with it. It won't boot up all the way in normal mode, only in safe mode. :P

Suppose that if worse comes to worse, I'll have to get the Best Buy guys to help. There's probably some trick involved in resolving this - I just need to "crack the code" (or at least find it - lol).

Once it's all fixed I'm going to beef up my system with more antivirus and anti-spyware protection. Definitely.

:)

I did some more searching and found an article with a possible solution. Apparently I had no idea what "safe mode with networking" was. LOL. Going to see if that will allow me to download the latest video drivers. If not, there are a few other things I can try before I go with Geek Squad.

I even found a solution that involved editing the registry, but that makes me too nervous. Rather trust the tech experts than go all out like that.

I'm so sorry to hear that -_-
There is nothing worst than having issues with computer è_é
I do have a lot with mine myself -_-
Hope everything will be better soon enough!
jessm78: Mystery Spotjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 01:20 am (UTC)
Thanks hon *hugs*

Exactly. It is the most annoying thing. I'm glad I have a laptop, but I still prefer using my computer.

I just hope I can find out what's wrong and how to fix it.
Babydracky: Xena_Tenderbabydracky on August 25th, 2008 08:35 am (UTC)
I hope you'll find a way to fix it soon enough *hugs*

Mine seems to be possessed because it is ALWAYS acting like it wants -_-
(And I'm definitely not sure holy water would help me there oo)

Thanks. :) *hugs*

I think I am closer to finding the problem. Now I need to see how I can solve it.

It's 4 years old now, I guess it's getting old and grouchy, lol

I had a computer trojan too! I downloaded Ad-Aware and SuperAntiSpyware (both are FREE from download.com) ran a thorough computer scan and it seemed to do the job. Haven't had anything in 2 days. Go to download.com (it is a secure site, no worries).
jessm78: SGA: Elizabeth Weirjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 01:22 am (UTC)
Ugh! I'm glad those programs took care of it. Norton Internet Security supposedly has something that takes care of spyware, but maybe the trojan outsmarted it. *grumbles*

I have the computer in safe mode now so I can't get online (still using mom's laptop). But if I can get it to behave itself long enough in normal mode, I'm going to check those out. Thanks for the info. :)

Suzotchkasuzotchka1 on August 25th, 2008 01:25 am (UTC)
You can try this too: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displaylang=en free from microsoft - it checks for trojans/spyware for free.
jessm78: SGA: Elizabeth Weirjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 10:18 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much!

Only problem is I can't get on the internet now. The blue screen of death came up just before and it sounds like it's a driver problem. I looked up the error message and apparently it has something to do with the video card/driver. I'd like to uninstall and then update it, but like I said, can't get online with it. The danged thing will only start up correctly in safe mode. :P
Fabifabilimah on August 25th, 2008 12:24 am (UTC)
honey sorry to hear that!
I hope it's not a virus damn evil people who creates these things, arrgh!
jessm78: Sam/Dean hug from Mystery Spotjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 01:23 am (UTC)
Thanks sweetie! *hugs*

I hope not too. Whatever it is, I hope it can be fixed. Just wanna get my computer back!
pygmymuse on August 25th, 2008 04:51 pm (UTC)
Wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your computer. I guess I know why people make viruses, but I still think they are wrong to do it and they could spend their time in a much better way.

*hugs*

Here's hoping it gets fixed soon!
jessm78: sam/daniel hugjessm78 on August 25th, 2008 10:24 pm (UTC)
Thanks. :) Yeah, I guess it was more of a rhetorical question in a way...

Though now I'm not so sure it's a virus. Got the blue screen of death... looked up the error message online and it looks like it could be a problem with my video card or driver. I just hope I can find a way to fix it. Maybe send Daniel over with a zat... *grin*

Thanks! *hugs*

Hey Jess,

I just had a problem with mine that was diffinatley virus related and had to pay for it to be wiped and rebooted, lost all my saved files grrrr. Anyway now I am learn to save separatley and back up my files girljust in case the evil little scum suckers get me again.

PC problems suck mightily, I hope yours is something fixable hun :)
jessm78: Spacemonkey Hugjessm78 on August 29th, 2008 12:31 pm (UTC)
Hey hon :)

Sorry to hear about your computer problem, it's really awful when that happens and you end up losing all your files. I've become more prudent about backing up my own files after this happened. I used to do it quite often but I got lazy.

Thanks! *hugs* Now I am thinking it's the video card. This weekend I'm going to have a look at it, see if it's shot and if so get a new one.

I hope you had a Happy Birthday! I'm going to make a little picspam for you over at classic_daniel
perpetuality1perpetuality1 on August 30th, 2008 02:36 am (UTC)
hey thank hon,

firstly i'll apologise for the lower caps but a moth flew in front of my face earlier and in a fit of pansy like girly fear i squeeled and threw my keyboard in the air. when it landed my caps lock key fell off and rolled somewhere and seriously, i'm not a messy person, but i cannot find it anywhere lol [hope that made you giggle]

thank you for the birthday wishes, thats very sweet of you. i've had a great time mostly becuase i've had the week off work to relax and see family and friends so it has been very nice.

so sorry to hear about your dog, hope she feels better soon and that it's just a passing bug, i think doggies can get them just like us.

good luck with the video chip *add smilie here* [darn caps lock key];p
jessm78: Spacemonkey Hugjessm78 on August 30th, 2008 05:13 pm (UTC)
*snicker snicker* I hope you do find that caps lock key at some point! But as long as you're not shouting (as in posting in all caps) I'm fine with it. ;) Actually that sounds a lot like me - I can see that happening to myself!

You're quite welcome! I'm glad that you had a great time. It's really nice to just take it easy and relax, get together with family and friends...

Aw, thanks hon. :) She doesn't seem too bad. Still coughs and wheezes now and then, but she hasn't lost her appetite (I'd be extremely worried if she ever did! *g*) or her energy, so I think that's a good sign.

Thanks! Examined the tower and not only was it covered with dust (:P) but the video card is at fault. I'm using my laptop in the interim, and going to see if I can buy a new video card. Just happy that I've figured out what it is.

And I haven't forgotten about the Daniel picspam in classic_daniel for you :) I'm back online with the laptop so I shall be doing that in the next few minutes. Hope you're having a nice weekend!
