Obligatory spoiler warning, of course.
That's what I have to start with.
I did see footage of the first five minutes of this episode thanks to a video taken at the Comic Con panel (yes, I am a spoileraholic), so I was prepared for that. I did think it was interesting how Dean's grave was encircled when he first broke out of the coffin and crawled to the surface. Nice touch with his voice all hoarse as he called out for help. And that handprint burned into his skin was intriguing...
Gotta love it when he wanders into the convenience store, grabs the candy bar and of course the Busty Asian Beauties magazine. *grin* But creepy vibes with the static on the tv set, the loud vibrating noise with the windows being blown out, and all.
Makes perfect sense that first person Dean would try to contact is Sam, but his number isn't working. Which falls into line with Sam pretty much dropping off the map after this. I liked Bobby's reaction when Dean called him, first hanging up and then threatening to kill whomever this is. You can imagine what he must have gone through when Dean died.
Dean grabs an old car and heads to Bobby's place. I did see this next scene already as a preview clip on one of the websites, but I love it nonetheless. Poor Dean is still pretty dazed as he greets Bobby. Bobby is thrown for a moment and then (as I'd expect) thinks that Dean is a demon, shapeshifter, revanent, or any other assorted baddie. After Dean proves it's really him by cutting himself with a silver blade, Bobby still appears in disbelief for a second, and then gives him a fierce hug. *sniffle* Loved that reunion scene. Very nicely done. :)
Bobby relates to Dean what happened to Sam when he died. And as I expected, it's pretty much the same as we saw in Mystery Spot during the three or four months he spent without Dean. He got very quiet and then stopped answering Bobby's calls and Bobby hadn't heard from him in a while. And Bobby thought they would salt and burn Dean, but Sam wouldn't allow it. Oh, Sammy. :(
Dean finds Sam via his cell phone GPS, by using an alias he knows Sam would use.
Hmm.... it takes him and Bobby to a motel in Illinois and a girl answers, thinking they're the pizza place that requires two delivery men to deliver pizza. Dean thinks they have the wrong address until...
Sammy shows up, looking as if he'd just emerged from a shower recently (with some nice damp Sammy!Hair... *grin*). His reaction is quite like Bobby's, totally not believing it's Dean. Until Bobby and Dean both convince him.
And then there is THE HUG. Ohhhhhh, my. Ohhhhh, boys. *sigh* Loved it.
So, Sammy had a fling with a girl during this time? I guess he really was broken this whole time... or there is another reason why (which we find out later). Poor Sam tried so hard to find a way to get Dean back, even tried to make a deal for him, but no demon would accept.
And he kept Dean's amulet!!! And he WORE it! Awwwwwwwww. Boys, you are so sweet. *hearts them*
I love how he gives Dean the keys to the Impala, saying he guesses Dean wants to drive. And of course, gotta love Dean's reunion with his "baby" (love the way he calls her "sweetheart"!!).
So, the "modifications" made to the Impala consist of Sam installing an I-Pod dock thingie? Heh. Love Dean's reaction to that, and Sam's innocent "I thought it was my car." And Dean's reaction when he turns it on and hears the music that comes out... *giggle*
Pamela is a..... meh... interesting character, I suppose. I didn't see enough of her to really make much of a judgment. Love when Dean questions her "Jesse Forever" tattoo. She replies that it wasn't forever, and Dean says, "his loss." Prompting her to reply that it could be Dean's gain. Nice amusement from Sam with the "she's going to eat you alive" comment. And then her "you're invited too, Grumpy" directed at him. Heh.
I wasn't too impressed with the whole seance thing she'd set up. Though I suppose that is her specialty. If I were her I wouldn't have treaded that far, though. Ouch. Getting her eyes all melty like that.
I did like how they highlighted the main question, which was how Dean managed to get out of Hell. He appears to have some little flashes here and there but he doesn't remember anything. And then there is the static and glass-shattering noise when he's alone in the motel room.
I like the scene in the diner when the waitress tells Dean she's somehow attracted to him and he replies that maybe it's his perky nipples. Oh, Dean. Heh. But she turns out to be a demon, and is in disbelief of how Dean managed to get out of Hell. You could tell it was bothering her somehow. Sam is still insistent on going after demons, while Dean thinks it's interesting how they are scared of something - obviously something related to the being that raised him up from Hell.
Whoa, Kripke wasn't kidding when he said that the boys would be holding secrets from each other. I'm not sure what Dean's will be just yet (possibly things he will remember about being in hell at some point later), but Sam's seem to be pretty evident already. When he is back at the diner that night, and finds the demons there to have melty eyes as well, he puts the demon waitress out of her misery. Whoa... okay, Sammy is starting to creep me out a little here. He obviously still has his powers and has been honing them quite a bit (and yeah, we can see he lied to Dean about that).
Third whoa... that girl he was seeing is apparently Ruby in a new body. I wonder if this girl is going to make many more appearances in the show, 'cause at first viewing I wasn't that impressed with her. But it seems that she's been helping Sam concentrate his powers with the way she tells him he did well. I was happy to hear her say that she didn't want to come between him and Dean, so who knows if we'll see much more of her...
And final whoa.... we see who is responsible for raising Dean up from Hell. Castiel. He seems quite enigmatic. Dean and Bobby looked terrified for a moment when none of their arsenal seemed to work against him. So is he really an angel? Meaning a "good" angel? Or is he in league with someone else? It was interesting how he explained to Dean that all the noise and the glass shattering was when he was trying to speak to Dean, but didn't think Dean wouldn't be able to hear him on that level. When he says that good things do happen, Dean's reaction is spot on, after all the crap he's been through and all he's seen.
We're left with an interesting question. Why exactly did Castiel raise Dean from Hell, and what are the plans in store for Dean? I guess we will learn through various bits and pieces as the season progresses. For now I kind of like Castiel. He seems to be an interesting character.
Love the preview for next week. The boys (and Bobby too, I guess) visited by everyone they couldn't save. Henriksen, Meg, and I guess Ronald from Nightshifter (we didn't see him but the spoilers mentioned in one of the CW crawls a while back said he'd make an appearance...unless it'll be in another episode). I'm really looking forward to that one!
