SPN Postcard Campaign?
I've posted about this in a few comms now, but never took the time to post about it in my own LJ. Tsk. Bad Jess :P lol

Jared recently (as in a few days ago) did an interview. He said he wasn't sure if the show was going to get a 5th season. For quite a while now, we've been hearing that Kripke has plans to do the show for 5 seasons. Then at the Chicago con, Jensen revealed that Kripke was going to stop at season 4 but then saw the ratings and thought they could go on for another season. But the way Jared was talking in this interview, it was as if they didn't know what they were going to do with this season - if they were going to try wrapping everything up at the end (for this to be the last season), or throw some kind of cliffhanger there at the end to head into another season.

Which brings me to my idea. A friend and I were talking the other day and saying that it's high time the CW renewed the show. I know most shows don't learn until around May if they're being renewed, but there have been early renewals. From what I've heard, filming is going to end around late March on this season. It would be nice if they knew before then whether the show would be renewed. The ratings this year have been great. It would be extremely stupid not to renew. We thought it would be a good idea for everyone to send in postcards to the CW in support of the show.

Then I got to thinking, maybe it would be great if we made it a campaign. Yes the ratings are great but that's no reason to get complacent. The CW have shown that they don't always make the wisest decisions. *cough*understatement*cough* I think some encouragement certainly wouldn't hurt, and would maybe help a little.

Here are my preliminary ideas:
  1. If they wish to get involved, people can send their postcards in support of the show/renewing it to me. I'll gather them all up into a package and send them to the CW (which would not be a problem for me postage-wise as I live here in the US). This plan looks quite good in terms of organization, IMHO. But it's totally up to you guys.
  2. People can send their postcards individually to the CW. I will provide you with the address. It might be easier for people, but not sure if it still carries on the appearance of one big campaign. Those are just my first thoughts, though.
  3. I can make up some postcard designs that people can print out and use if they like; or they could make their own or use any old postcard they like.
  4. If you're stuck on what to say, I can give you some hints/tips/ideas. And of course some basic rules of etiquette for writing to the network if it's the first time you're doing so.

I really want this to be a group effort, and want you guys to have as much input as possible. This will be all for you. So I have a couple of polls ...

Poll #1343402 SPN Postcard Campaign

How would you prefer to send these postcards?

to me (I live in NY, USA), and I will gather them all into one big package to send to the CW
individually to the CW network, but mention they are part of this campaign
Either one is fine (I'd like to have a choice)

I've got some ideas for the name of this campaign. Which do you like the best (if any)?

Unfinished Business
Rock the Salt (as a take-off on "Rock the Vote")
Neither, I have an idea I'd like to share (leave in a comment on this post)

I can either make up postcard designs for you to print out, you can make your own, or send any old postcard. Which do you prefer?

make (print) a postcard with your designs
make my own postcard with my own ideas
send any old postcard I can find
Any of the above (I'd like a choice)

If you'd rather not take the poll but want to share some thoughts, ideas, etc. with me, you can leave me some comments below. Either way, I'd appreciate as much input on this as possible. I really want the CW to know how we support this show, and, again, even though the ratings are great, we shouldn't take anything for granted. I'd also like the SPN crew to know we are doing this (I am debating over whether I should say something during EyeCon, at least to Jared, about it).

Thanks in advance, guys. :)

"Because they still have work to do" is absolutely genius! I love it, we should totally make that the official slogan. Either that could get included on the front of the cards, as part of the design, or it could be written on the back, and then people could add their own individual comments underneath aswell, if they wanted. Actually, the front could be something like "Unfinished Business - Renew Supernatural For Its 5th Season!", or something similar that at least made it obvious what the postcard was for, lol.

I like the idea of voting for the best designs, and I think if this officially starts in mid-February, then there should hopefully be enough time to sort all that stuff out beforehand. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to do, you could post about it in the comm, explaining the whole concept, and ask people to contribute designs, give them 24-48 hours or something, then put up a vote? I also agree that sending cards up until the finale is a good idea - it'll be funny because depending on where everyone is sending cards from, and how long they take, the network'll probably keep getting them til long after the finale too, muhahahaha!

And you're welcome! Glad to be of help in any way that I can :-)

Thanks! I'm glad you like the idea :) I guess we'll see how it will come out on the designs. It could appear on the front, or on the back somewhere near the bottom (and I thought maybe a very light image of the Impala printed on the box where people write their messages). Hmm... I'm seeing on the top of the front, "Unfinished Business" and then across the bottom "Renew Supernatural for its 5th Season!" *gets excited* lol

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I'm going to be a little busy this weekend with Comic Con and all, but after that I should have plenty of time to get this all up and running. And I think your idea of the scheduling would really work well. I also asked one of the mods of the spn_postcards comm for advice and she agreed that each person sending cards individually would be a better idea than gathering them all together to send at once. It would be better postage-wise, plus that way they would see how it's all the product of many fans with one agenda (instead of one package looking like it's just from one enthusiastic fan).

Again I really appreciate it! I'm going to start thinking up a design or two. :)

Oooh, when you say you imagined a print of the Impala on the card too, does that mean you can get the cards made up online somewhere? I hadn't thought of that before! I thought maybe we'd just be printing the designs off and sort of making the cards by ourselves XD I'm slow, sorry! That all sounds good, though! *gets excited too*

This is irrelevant, but dude, you're going to Comic Con? *thuds* JEALOUS!!! Gah, I'd love to go one day but there's no way I can afford it right now. You're so lucky!

Anyway, good call asking the postcard comm people for help! And I don't know why, but this made me snerk:

(instead of one package looking like it's just from one enthusiastic fan).

I think it's the idea of one fan being all enthusiastic and just sending a big bunch of cards. It's funny because we'd all probably do it! XD

Anyway, again, you're welcome! I'm looking forward to seeing your designs, and seeing your this whole thing get underway :-)

Oh, oops! Heh, no actually I was thinking of coming up with designs for the front and back and people could print them out... although now that I think of it, that sounds more complicated :P I didn't even think of whether they could be ordered online. I guess that could be done, but it might be easier for people to print them out themselves... probably would be cheaper for all of us, too. :) Sorry I wasn't very clear on that! I have a terrible habit of doing that, lol

Aw!! I so wish I could bring you -heck, ALL my fellow SPN fanatics- with me! I only found out about this last week too! It's been planned forever, but just announced last week that Jared would be there promoting Friday the 13th. It's the first time either of the boys have appeared somewhere that's so close to me (well, no... they were there for the CW Upfronts, but that was before I became a fan, LOL).

Hee! It is funny when you look at it that way! :D I can just see them getting so many big packages from all over the place... drowning in cards! *grins evilly*

Awesome! I've started coming up with a few ideas, and I hope to get working on them once the con is over. :)

Oh, well that makes sense too! Actually that's what I figured what would happen initially, and then I just got confused (it happens easily, don't worry, it's not your fault). I think you're right though, it's easier just to have designs and for people to print them off individually, it shouldn't be too difficult or expensive to get a bit of card and glue some paper to it :-P

(well, no... they were there for the CW Upfronts, but that was before I became a fan, LOL)

Doesn't that stuff just KILL you when you find out about it?! XD I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon (seriously, he is my master), but I only got into Firefly/Serenity in 2006, and it turns out he actually premiered the movie here, IN MY CITY, the year before at the film festival. He was here, and so was the cast. I want to die.

Drowning in cards sounds good, that's the idea, hopefully ;-) So long as they take notice of us!

Woot! I won't bug you anymore, lol, but like I says before, looking forward to seeing your stuff! If you need help with anything else, don't hesitate to ask :-D
