SPN #6x19 Mommy Dearest (episode review)
Here's my review/recap of tonight's episode... with some general speculations about next season at the end...

First... yay, music is back. Meh, it's not classic rock exactly, but it's... 70s music...

Second... That's it for Eve?? Really? Um, I'll come back to this...

Third... Cas, Cas, Cas.... what a tangled web we weave. I'll come back to that, too.

This episode was a bit chilling at times, especially where the kids were concerned (I was a little suspicious about the quiet younger one), and of course Eve posing as Mary.

It starts out bloody with Eve showing up in a bar where "You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate is playing in the background. She kisses one of the kids, he acts like he's entranced. She says she "gave him a gift" ... So she's turning him obviously. Next thing they all get turned and are attacking each other, but... falling prey to something and dying. Some kind of parasitic thing like the Croatoan virus? That's what this made me think of at first, but it wasn't the same.

Then we cut to our boys and Dean is making bullets filled with the phoenix ashes. Apparently he's got some spilled on himself but they don't seem to affect him. Right away I was like, "HA, I knew it! The ashes aren't gonna work - at least by themselves!" But I decided to wait on that as Sam wonders if it'll hurt monsters like her, but not they themselves.

Dean is pissed at Cas and to get him here he yells "Cas get outta my ass!!" LOL. And of course Cas appears. Dean had a few good one-liners in this ep. Anyway Cas says that Eve is hidden from him. Sam thinks that it would be good to have an "inside man", aka a friendly monster. But they have to think of who they could get...

And they end up getting... Lenore the vamp! It was awesome to see her again, but I was a little disappointed that her appearance was so short. Cas (I assume?) brings her there and I thought it was interesting how Cas seems kinda hidden in the shadows, or is lit so darkly when Sam introduces her to him and says that he's their friend. I love the Puppy Eyes he gives Lenore as he tells her they want to talk to her about Eve. She won't say anything about her and is trying to stay away from her. Sam asks her where her nest is and apparently they left. They couldn't fight having her voice in their heads, so they left and had started killing again. Sam notes that she hasn't but seems like she's been having trouble fighting it, trying not to give in... everyone gives in. Dean wants to know where Eve is. Lenore says she's probably listening to them right now, but Bobby says they're still going in after her. Lenore can't help them. Sam: Can't or won't? He says she clearly still gives a crap and she doesn't want this whole planet dead (and can I say that he absolutely killed me with that last line? *fans self*) He asks her to tell them where Eve is, in his sweet Puppy way. :) She tells them where and says Eve now knows they're coming.

She then asks them for one last favor - to kill her. They don't want to do that but she insists she's dangerous, she hears Eve's voice all the time, she's even fed and she can't stop. Cas kills her with.... angel mojo, I guess? Wow, that was pretty quick. He says they needed to move this along. Wow, what's your hurry, Cas? Oh, and I nearly forgot... I love how Lenore remembers their last encounter and mentions Gordon, and Sam tells her Gordon is head because he beheaded him. Dean cuts in and tells her how he did it, with wire and about how awesome it was. Sam gives him such a bitchface - LOL. Loved it!

Getting back to the story - so they end up in that town and Dean wonders how it looks like Pleasantville. He also calls Cas "Smitey McSmiterton." Heh.

Sam's eating!!! :D LOL. They're in a diner and Bobby is doing research on an iPad? I love how he doesn't consider it a computer, Sam insists it's a computer and Bobby says "A computer has buttons." Hee.

Cas is trying to leave but has difficulties doing so. Dean says "now you look like you're pooping." LOL! Cas is apparently "locked out" and is powerless for some reason. Hmm...

Bobby finds CDC info online. A guy reported an illness to a doctor. Turned out it was one of the young guys who saw Eve in the beginning. Some kid named Ed. The guys split up - Dean & Cas, and Sam & Bobby.

Dean and Cas check out the doctor's office. The receptionist or nurse or whatever comes out and Dean tells her something's wrong with his friend. Cas: I have a painful burning sensation. Heh. She tells him the doc is out and then tells Cas he should try to find some ointment. Hmm, doc seems to be missing and then they find Ed's body in a bad in a shed? What is going on?

Sam and Bobby get info on the doc and his family when the sheriff comes and questions them. Sheriff guy looks familiar, I think I saw him in Nightshifter... one of the local law enforcement guys who was introduced to Henriksen during the bank hostage thing? Really looks like him. Anyway Sam and Bobby pose as FBI agents and the sheriff says he's the doc's friend.

Nice car, Sam.

They all go into the house and they find a whole bunch of Ed's, all looking dead until one of them moves. He's apparently really sick but it turns out he's not Ed, he's one of the other kids. He'd taken Ed to the doctor and now they're all sick. He tells our boys that he saw a woman in white in the bar but before he can say anything else he dies.

Dean: I'm bathing in Purell tonight. LOL my thoughts exactly.

They find a bunch of dead bodies in the bar, and one looks like it's a vampire until Dean sees the horn thingie in her hand and wonders if it's a wraith. Looks like Eve has been making hybrids. Dean deems them "Jefferson Starships", because they're horrible and hard to kill. LOL! Sam wants to know why they're dead and they seem to have some sort of virus.

Sheriff comes in and cuffs Sam and Bobby, taking them away (Dean was hiding). Okay, something's off about this sheriff.. yep, turns out he's a Jefferson Starship. And the cops are too. They let loose on Sam and Bobby till Dean breaks in. Then Bobby questions the "sheriff".

Sam and Dean think more of them are breaking in so they investigate, but they find a holding cell with two young boys tied up and gagged inside. It turns out they're the doc's kids. Aw, I like how gentle they are with the boys, especially Sam. :) Dean wants to talk to them to make sure it's really them while Cas and Bobby question the "sheriff."

Okay, I started getting a little suspicious of the younger boy, especially how his older brother told them that he stopped talking when this all happened. I mean I did have flashbacks to the kid from Dead in the Water who stopped talking when his dad drowned, but for some reason I didn't think this kid here was totally harmless. The older boy says that the cops told them that they're food. Sam and Dean find out they have an uncle and they want to take the kids to him so they'll be safe.

Cas disapproves and wants to find Eve NOW. Wow, again, why in such a hurry, Cas? There really is something about him. The way he seems desperate and told Dean that he wants him focused almost gave me flashbacks to Ruby telling Sam this in season 4. It's probably not the same exact thing, but I found it pretty interesting...

But Dean tells him off and says he's tired of the "greater purpose." He wants to save a couple of kids instead. Ooh, yeah. Cas looks defeated. And I swear at that moment they played a variation of that little tune we heard in Devil's Trap and then again in IMTOD.

Aww, the two boys are adorable in the back seat, especially with the older boy taking care of the younger one. Kind of makes me think of Sam and Dean as little kids, and judging from our boys' expressions I wonder if they're kinda thinking the same thing? The reunion with their uncle was really sweet too but I'm not holding my breath...

Back to Bobby and Cas... Bobby tries to be reassuring about the boys but Cas is still antsy and saying it was a bad idea to let them go. Bobby reminds him they need the coordinates of Eve so he should get the info from the "sheriff." Cas needs 5 minutes alone with him. Bobby reminds him his batteries are dead but Cas insists and looks like he got the info out of him.

So Eve is in a diner apparently. Dean hands out the bullets with the ash inside them and he says he and Sam will go in while Bobby and Cas wait outside.

Sam sees Starships via his phone. Eve gives them food and seems willing to talk. But the monsters all start locking them in and going through their artillery. She finds the phoenix ash and asks for it to be destroyed. Ha, I knew it. But she says she's not here to fight. She didn't want to tear up the planet at first. She liked the natural order of things. But her kids got kidnapped and tortured (hmm... thinking back to Grampy now...).

Dean doesn't seem to want to listen, so she makes herself look like Mary. OW. That has to be so painful for our boys, especially Dean. Is it me or did Mary's voice sound kind of odd at first? Like echo-y as if the lines were being delivered somewhere else?

Aha! Crowley comes up again! Figured he would since we saw him in the "Then" recap at the beginning. Apparently he's NOT dead?? Hee, Dean refers to Crowley as the "little limey." Eve says that he's hurting her babies. And apparently it's all about the souls - they have such power that together they're like a nuclear reactor and Crowley wants to harness that power. And apparently he wants to siphon off her supply. She was trying to build the perfect beast, and all the ones who died were like "beta testing." She eventually got it right though and it's been around them the whole time.

The kid. Oh shit. Yep, I knew there had to be something not quite right about him. Eep, he kills his older brother and then his uncle!

Eve has an offer for them - find Crowley and bring him to her, and she'll let them live. You can tell how hard this is for Dean, to even look at her wearing their mother's face. He doesn't want to make a deal with her. So she brings in Cas and then Bobby. Cas is apparently "unplugged" as long as she's around. Anyway Dean keeps refusing, saying "We don't work with demons, we don't work with monsters." Uh, hate to tell you guys, but you did work with demons before. Ruby, Crowley ........ yeah, yeah, I know.

Eve says she'll turn them and they'll do what she wants. Dean still won't give in so she grabs Sam. Nooo!! Dean says "Bite me!" and she does! Uh oh...

But wait, he somehow got her with the ash anyway?

Wow... okay, I'm officially eating my hat. I didn't think the ash would really work against her. But looks like it did.

But is this it? Really? Cause if she's really gone.... I wasn't expecting it to be that easy. I mean if this whole storyline with her is already wrapped up, what's going to happen in the final episodes now? I guess just the war in Heaven and what Cas is up to? I just can't believe that's it. But... eh, I guess we will see.

Cas does more mojo to finish up the rest of the monsters and then he heals Dean. Um, how was he able to do this if his "batteries" were apparently dead? And he was left in such a condition at the end of the previous episode. Did he just heal somehow in between now and then? Maybe I missed something somewhere...

Dean wants to go back to the kid and of course they find them all dead. Dean wants to know what ganked the kid and they find sulfur. So now demons are at work. Hm... Sam wonders if Eve told the truth about Crowley. Cas insists he burned Crowley's bones and doesn't understand. But he'll look into it and he quickly leaves. Bobby wonders how Crowley got away and wonders if Cas meant to make a mistake. Hmm, something about Cas' quick departure makes me wonder if he's not being totally truthful. Could it be that those really weren't Crowley's bones that he'd burned? Could he have made a deal with Crowley somehow? I can see souls being at stake here. If Eve is telling the truth, Crowley wants souls at his disposal, and Cas may want them to aid him in the war in Heaven.

Dean doesn't want to believe that Cas would do it, and he asks Sam. Sam doesn't seem to be sure, and it makes me wonder if he does think Cas could be up to something as well.

Meanwhile, Cas is back in the diner. Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" starts playing on the jukebox when Crowley appears and asks Cas how long he has to clean up his messes. Oh yeah.... just what are you up to, Cas?

Anyway... wow, this ended up being longer than I thought it would be. Heh, sorry about that. But it really made me think and wonder what we're going to see next with Cas. Looks like we'll find out more about this whole shady arrangement and what's at stake for him in this war. It also makes me wonder what's in store for him next season. I wonder if Cas going rogue now isn't going to end well in the finale. It's leading up to something pretty big I think.

So to sum up I liked that we got more music even though it wasn't classic rock. Liked Dean's one-liners, Sam being rather gentle in the questioning of Lenore and then the kids (as opposed to the bad cop role he had as Soulless!Sam), and the concept of Eve trying to come up with the perfect monster was interesting. I'm still not sure though if this is really the end of her. I'm thinking we won't get to see her next season, that that plotline will be all finished, but I didn't really expect her to be gone with 3 more episodes to go. But again I guess we'll see. And this whole thing with Cas intrigues me. I wonder what the boys will think if they find out he might have some deal going with Crowley.

Can they all disappear except Sam, Dean and Bobby?
Can they bring the good ole music back?
Can they bring the Impala back?

I think we all wish these things, hon :) I thought Jensen said in an interview that the music is coming back, I wanna see the classic rock back.

And what happened to the Impala this episode? That was strange...

I am really starting to think that Cas may not be in the show next season. Just a feeling I'm getting...

I feel the same.

You make very valid points. But cas can't throw stones no more about sam's actions with ruby, when he is doing the same exact thing with crowley. That a very big no no. When it comes to dean, he even dropped sam like a hot potato but they made up after a time.

Now since cas saved dean that will be the ultimate betrayal for dean, and him cas to go against everything he accused sam of doing Bi S4.

But remember death told dean to follow the souls is this what he meant? Perhaps.

I'm glad you brought that up. I agree completely. I'm really looking forward to learning more about this deal he's got worked out with Crowley and the fallout from that. Especially where Dean is concerned.

I was thinking about that, too. I think that could very likely be it.

honestly I hope we don't see anything like last year's finale. I feel like this finale won't exactly be about the boys but about the rest of the cast. Which is weird. I mean two episodes before the end and suddenly Sam can't use the computer and Bobby does? Once upon a time it was a show about Sam and Dean. Now I still love it and I loved this season honestly cause they're pretty. Prettier every year, so I guess if the show gets crap next year I'll like it if Jared looks hotter.
That's me, I wouldn't mind if it was Dean and Sam again and noone else.

I agree with you, hon. It seems that this war is going to be the theme of the finale, even though they are making the first part more about Dean and the last part more about Sam. As much as I love Bobby, I really want to see the show go back to being about Sam and Dean too. LOL, yes I think Jared's looks will be the reason for me watching next year if it gets crappy.

I know exactly how you feel.

The reason Cas could power up again at the end is that the Mother had somehow cut his connection to Heaven while he was near her. Once she died he was connected again.

I love it that the Mother of All was just a MOTW and not the big bad -- because as a big bad, she wasn't very impressive, but as a MOTW she was awesome. She was almost a red herring in the mystery except turns out she was messing up the plan somehow.

And when I say 'the plan' I mean whatever it is that Crowley and Cas are actually doing. With the souls.

Pretty cool how its coming together!

Ah okay, that makes sense. I kept thinking about how he'd been "damaged" in that fight with Rachel in the previous episode, but I guess it was just a flesh wound and he'd healed up since then.

I have to say it was a very interesting head fake there. They seemed to be setting her up to be the big bad, but it was just something of a red herring.

Really looking forward to seeing what exactly is up with this "plan" of Cas' and Crowley's. Maybe they have some deal worked out concerning the souls. Cas really seems to need a lot of them in this war.

Very interesting indeed!

I feel the same way you do about this episode. There were parts I liked, Sam and Dean working together and caring about those kids was so sweet. I have no idea what's up with Cas, hopefully it will be explained in the next episode.

Speaking of the finale, I'm super worried about Sammy and the wall possibly crumbling!

I agree, Kristin. I really want to know what's up with Cas, and I think we should learn more about it in next week's episode.

Oh, I know! I'm really dreading it! I'm just trying to have faith that he'll be fixed somehow. Kripke did say that they can't leave him a drooling mess, so he's got to be alright, some way. I just hope it won't be part of the cliffhanger and we'll be agonizing all hellatus over it!

I hope so too, but I have a bad feeling they might leave poor Sammy's status at the cliffhanger! D:

Me tooo. :( I have a feeling it could be like last season, where we didn't know what was going on in that final scene (if it was really Sam, or Lucifer, or what). The way I kept myself going through hellatus was that we knew Jared was signed on, and Sam has to come back somehow. It just drove me crazy trying to figure out how!

Great review!
I can't wait to see what goes down when Dean and Sam find out what Castiel is up to.
