SPN #10x13 Halt and Catch Fire (episode review)
Some thoughts on this one...

Another episode I really liked. It really felt old school. Using the salt lines, the EMFs, just the brothers working a case together. Okay, yeah, so most of the kids bugged me. They're a bunch of stupid kids, and what happens to stupid kids? Why, they get killed! And they were basically over-the-top stupid. Especially the blond girl. Ugh, I found myself rolling my eyes in that scene before she gets killed.

Anyway, back to this one seeming old school. The part with the truck and the boys burning it, total callback to Route 666 to me, except the truck wasn't a racist one. The whole idea about the kids doing these things and causing death reminded me of Bloody Mary. Even the part where Dean was smashing the computer screens and the phones, it reminded me of them smashing the mirrors. When Andrew first appeared on the screen, it seemed slightly cheesy to me, but...*shrugs* Oh, and the part with the chatting and the 810 appearing all over made me think of that season 3 episode... Long Distance Call?

Just have to share something funny...The scene in which stupid guy #2 dies when his stereo basically blows his brains out...after the commercial break started, I said to my mom (who was watching in her bed) "Holy crap, did you see that?" Her reply: "Yeah, it was cute." LMAO... Seriously, that's what she said. Turns out she'd dozed off and thought I was talking about one of the brotherly banter parts.

Speaking of which...lol at Dean gushing over the campus food. And his reaction when Sam tells him that nothing is really deleted from the internet. The first girl they interview saying to Dean (after his confusion over the Siri type thing in the phone) that oh, he's Gen X. And then when she's never heard of Christine and he tells her "it's a Gen X thing." Heh.

So Andrew hopped onto the wi-Fi...huh that's never been done before.

Dean talking to Delilah about moving on. Oh, yeah, he is also talking about himself. And we see that later on in his conversation with Sam in the car at the end. Sam really wants to help him and mentions Cas coming close but Dean doesn't want to do it - he wants it to come from within himself. This actually makes me think of what Sam said to Dean at the end of The Hunter Games...didn't he tell him that maybe it has to come from within him? So it sounds like this is influencing Dean (unless I'm remembering wrong). But I do think Sam will try to help him and I wonder if there will be any tension resulting from that...*sigh*

All in all, was nice to see those old school elements back and the boys working a case together. I knew those kids were cannon fodder based on their sheer stupidity, and that Delilah would probably make it out alive because she seemed to be the least stupid one, lol.

Yes, yes, and yes. I totally agree. I have so much love for this episode! Only not as eloquently as you did. :D

Awesome! :D Aw, you make me blush, hon... ;) Still I'm glad you enjoyed it too!

OH! There was an ep tonight!

Ugh. I don't have a working TV, so I forget when EVERYTHING actually airs. Thanks for the reminder!

Sure, no problem! :)

I enjoyed watching this one very much indeed, for the old school elements (though I didn't mind the over the top stupidity of the targets, that was like half amusing parody to me, I did appreciate the ghost making the non-involved girl get out before he crashed the truck, downright gentlemanly!). What did bug me was Dean's line with the 'attractive college girls' because that felt like a running gag stretched too thin by the forth time it happened. I'm also not enarmoured with the fact that the boys conveniently forget and relearn everything they know about computers and hacking whenever there's a competence joke to be made, that just wobbles around in canon too much for my tastes.
But I still liked the way they resolved the case Roadkill-style and the end both for the women as well as the brothers felt like something settled, clicked into place for a new beginning if you will. I'm very much looking forward to next week though.

I agree with you about them forget those computer skills. Didn't Dean show off in like s8 or so about all the skills Frank taught him? And also, him oogling all the college girls was weird to me. Not for nothing, but Dean is 36 years old. Are we really to expect that he's going to be hitting on 18 year olds? That was funny back in Hookman but not now.

Yes, it just felt incongruous to me, like the writers were a little too tone-deaf towards their own canon to pull off the requisite running gags. I'd rather have not as many gags (or at least a subtle note in the acting that says they're putting up a *dumb front* for the witness to get her to talk, which would have been both intelligent AND canonical) than ones that are just lazy writing.

Yeah, the old school elements were what really made it for me. And that's a good point, those OTT students weren't meant to be taken seriously. I rewatched it and had a chuckle over how stupid they were.

Oh yeah, that did bug me too, and I definitely noticed it more upon rewatching. It's been beaten to death, enough already. Same with the forgetting about their computer skills. I also noticed Sam's line asking if Dean would kill him if he drove his car after he died. Hasn't that already happened? It's as if some elements of canon were just thrown out the window.

*nods* I did too. Next week's looks like it's going to have quite a bit going on, especially as far as the story arc is concerned. Looking forward to it.

I noticed the car thing in passing, but while I don't want to excuse people for not being up on their canon necessarily, I think the joking note in that exchange can be interpreted as 'been there, done that, ripped the t-shirt in a werewolf hunt' type ironic banter. Which maybe wasn't what the writers had in mind, but I'm going to put down for my own peace.

Yes it was great. A good old salt and burn. Next week looks good too but sadly Castiel, Crowley and his mummy are back. Hope they don't take too much screen time.

Yes!! Almost as if they were going back to their roots. :) *sigh* Yup... I already groaned when I saw that Sam wasn't in any of the promo pics. :( He is in the sneak peek, though. Guess we will see how it goes - hopefully it'll be good (though trying to keep expectations low as I've been doing much of this season)!

Yes!! I saw the promo pic's a few days ago and was so pissed that Sam wasn't even in one pic, while Crowley's mum is in two!!! Sigh when side characters are in the show again the boy's lose screen time, well I say boy's I actual mean Sam cause Carver and his writers seem to all have real hard on's for Dean but Sam not so much.
jessm78: Supernatural: Sam pouting (3x06)jessm78 on February 14th, 2015 04:52 pm (UTC)
Oh, I know! I mean, why couldn't they have only had one promo pic with Crowley & his mumsie? Is that really such a big part of the episode? I also noticed they didn't have many promo pics at all from this one - 7 in total? Meanwhile for others they've had as many as 11 or 12. Oh I can't stand that, and when they seem to have 3 separate storylines it means even less time for the brothers (especially Sam). Ugh.

It's funny how similar our thoughts n this epi were. The whole time I was watching it I felt like it was a mashup of Bloody Mary, Long Distance Caller, Route 666 - obv just for the truck - and Roadkill.
jessm78: Jensen & Jared: The Boys (CC'10)jessm78 on February 12th, 2015 09:48 pm (UTC)
That is funny, I'm glad it wasn't just me. The blonde girl (Julie? Whatever her name was...) even reminded me of the blonde girl from Bloody Mary who was joking about the whole thing and ended up being killed. Just her whole over-the-top attitude.
mosinging1986 on February 13th, 2015 01:41 am (UTC)
All right, I'm dumb.

Does everyone know what the title of the ep means except me?
jessm78jessm78 on February 14th, 2015 04:53 pm (UTC)
Nope, I don't know what the title means either, so if you're dumb, you're not the only one (though I prefer to think of both of us as not dumb :)).
mosinging1986 on February 14th, 2015 09:26 pm (UTC)
Ha! At least we're in good company. ;)
