SGA #4.17 Midway (episode review)
Apologies if my thoughts on this ep are a bit scattered/incoherent/whatever but I'm falling asleep on my keyboard (wanted to get this posted before tomorrow as I'm expecting company this weekend and won't have much time otherwise). I also have a few general thoughts to add regarding the next season of the show, which I'll put behind another cut.

I thought this episode was pretty interesting.

Firstly....  with all apologies to Jack O'Neill....  Teal'c - what's with the hair?? ;)  I loved Sam referencing it when he first arrived on Atlantis. And of course Teal'c's "You do not like it?" Sam concedes it's more "Earth."  Guess Teal'c has been experimenting with the likes of Geri Curl. And he still has the skunk stripe in the hair. LOL.

Speaking of Sam, it was really lovely to see her interacting with Teal'c again. As you guys know I don't ship the two but I adore their friendship.  There was a very nice, quiet, subtle show of it in this episode (though am I the only one who thought Sam looked almost giddy when she first greeted him? Hmm, fodder for the shippers I guess...heh).  I like how Teal'c tells her that command has been good to her.

The interaction between Ronon and Teal'c was interesting, especially their first meeting.  Sam says the two of them are quite alike, and while I'd say you could compare Ronon a bit to the very early season (like S1-2 of SG-1) Teal'c, I don't think they're 100% alike. For one thing, Teal'c seems a bit more.... formal in his mannerisms, while Ronon is quite a bit more in your face and informal.

Teal'c prefers tater tots. Heh.

His attitude when he mentioned the events on Sateda, especially about Ronon and his people surrendering, kind of bugged me a little.  It seemed as if he was almost cocky.  I'm guessing he was trying to prepare Ronon for the type of questioning the IOA would inflict on him, but I was wondering if he was being sincere.

That jousting scene between them was a bit meh. I was glad Sam stepped in to break it up.

Have to say I was really wondering how the Wraith got the codes/passwords/whatever to establish a connection to the midway station, at first anyway.  So it turns out that Todd is a double agent. Figures.  Knew there was something we couldn't trust about him.  I wonder if that will be addressed at some point later on - as in John and/or Rodney confronting the guy.  I'm not usually up to date on the spoilers for this show but if anyone is privy to them I'd be interested in finding out about this.

It was nice to not see Teal'c as a damsel in distress, after we've seen it quite a bit in S9 and 10 of SG-1 (Stronghold, Flesh and Blood, In the Company of Thieves, etc.). Not to knock SG-1 again but it's nice to give the guy a rest, lol.  He and Ronon ended up working pretty well together.

I have to admit that the one Wraith who was trying to figure out the codes on the midway station was a bit whiny. Geez... I couldn't wait for them to take him out.  Like how John and Rodney do their hero thing...

Shame the midway station got blown up, but I'm glad they were all able to escape via the jumper.

Good on the IOA guy (what a wuss, seriously) decided Ronon was a valuable asset.  Ronon saves Teal'c and tries the "indeed" catchphrase for himself.

A few little bits I loved:

Ronon commenting that Teal'c says "Indeed" a lot.  Teal'c hasn't even noticed.  Nice little touch of humor there that isn't overbearing or too slapstick-y (speaking of slapstick... the two of them watching The Three Stooges while they were at the midway station?? Oookay....).

Dr. Lee being their sort of "tour guide" at the midway station... mentioning movies they have, the sudoku (sp?) books that are all filled in... The griping back and forth with Kavanaugh, etc... I'm glad that he didn't become Wraith food.

Walter, yay!! Unconscious Walter, nooooo!

Dr. Lee and Kavanaugh arguing over Pearl Harbor in the jumper and poor Rodney losing it... "All you guys have done is talk talk talk, dehdehdehdehdeh...." Heh... and John of course locks himself away from them to spare himself the headache.  I like how Ronon went to rouse him and told him that he passed the IOA thingie.  Nice little friendship interaction between the two of them.

How about the preview for next week's episode? Looks like that will be gripping... especially the "last 5 minutes" as advertised. Looking forward to that!

And now a few general comments/thoughts regarding season 5:

Okay, so apparently Torri was offered a chance to come back to SGA but she wouldn't take it. From what I've read I don't blame her.

Daniel will make a few appearances on the show, while Sam will be exiting.  I've heard she will make some appearances in S5, but I am expecting that they will not be for the same episodes that Daniel is appearing in.  I haven't heard much about the Daniel eps, but if I heard correctly, Joe Mallozzi said he wrote a scene in which Daniel and Rodney do a lot of talking.  That will be interesting to see, but I'm very disheartened by the fact that we won't see him interact with Sam at all.  When I first heard MS would make some appearances I was a bit hopeful that we'd get some Daniel/Sam interaction - and don't get me wrong, I love the Sam/Teal'c interaction we've seen in the 2 eps this season, but my hope for any Daniel/Sam scenes (and I'm only asking for friendship here) has gone down the drain.

I miss my D/S interaction! *cries* :(  Figures Mallozzi would do that since he probably hates the idea of the two ever sharing a scene or interacting as anything more than mere coworkers going through the motions of their jobs.

I just hope there's *some*thing in Continuum, even though I don't hold out much hope even there. I guess all I can do is watch the old episodes to keep the friendship alive.

Sorry, rant over.

I'm sort of going to go slightly up against you here....but only in so much that I'd also LOVE to see much closer interaction between Sam and Daniel, but only if it also includes LOTS of Daniel interacting with Atlantis too.....I was so disappointed that he didn't get the chance to explore anywhere in the Pegasus Project and ended up in a room with an Ancient for all that time.....Also I just don't trust JM to write Daniel a decent meaty part....I can only hope that MS has a bit of input into how his character will be involved in the storyline and make sure that he gets a good crack at "guest spot".....

I just fear that the writers will pay "lip service" to another SG-1 member, either to keep the ratings up/Daniel fans "sweet" without really being that enthusiastic about him......

Fingers crossed for both hopefully....Sam and Daniel and lots of Daniel and Atlantis.....

Deeds xx

Nah, not really much up against me. :) I know what you mean. I was disappointed that we didn't get to see Daniel exploring Atlantis much in Pegasus Project. He spent the whole time talking to Morgan Le Fay. What happened to "Daniel Disneyland"? He's been itching to go to Atlantis since S8 and he spent most of his time there in one room!

I'm afraid I don't trust JM very much in that regard myself. I heard that he had written a scene between Daniel and Rodney that involved much quick talking, but that was it. I share your fears.

I don't hold out much hope for either desire, but I'll keep my fingers crossed nonetheless. Hopefully we will both make out well. :)

I can't watch this episode without remembering the Comic-Con panel last year. Mallozzi let slip that something bad was gonna happen to the Midway Station and David looks at him and goes "wait, I haven't gotten that script yet."

LOL!! Oh, thanks for reminding me about that! I remember hearing about that.... heh, poor David! ;)

Yeah, I'm hoping that at least one of the episodes he appears in will by luck also be one that Sam will appear in. I don't hold out much hope though.

Oh well, suppose fanfic can always fix that. :)
